Choose the Best UK Solicitor in 2021

When you find yourself in need of legal advice, it’s easy to get confused about what your options are and how to find the best professional—solicitor or otherwise—for your specific requirements. Add to that the fact that there are both local and remote options – your work is cut out for you before any legal process begins.

Here’s a quick guide that will give insight in how to choose the best solicitor for you.

Research the Service You Need

The best place to start is by learning the terminology for the specific legal service you need and searching for a solicitor that offers that service. Your best bet is to do a quick Google search for what you need—using whatever terminology feels most accurate to you—and see what comes up.

If you’re able to find that specific service on a solicitor’s website, you’re probably searching in the right place. If not, look for alternative phrasing in the search results. It’s common for a service that non-legal spaces call one thing to be something completely different within the legal field.

Once you know what you’re looking for, narrow your search to include only solicitors whose sites list your service as an option (or, better yet, a specialty).

Look at reviews (they’re important!)

Checking reviews is a crucial step for hiring just about anyone in 2021. When was the last time you tried any new service—or even a new restaurant, for that matter—without checking to see what other people think? While you don’t need to go into too much detail here, you’ll be able to rule out any options that have consistently negative or mediocre reviews. Take any candidates that are still in the running with decent reviews and move on to the next step.

Contact Your Shortlist

At this point, the best way to make the right choice for your situation is to get on the phone and start asking questions. You’ll likely be able to find a phone number on each solicitor’s website, but if not, there should be an email address or contact form.

When you do reach the person (or people) who specialize in your field, make sure they’re confident that they can handle what you’re asking of them. If there’s any hesitancy, it may not be a good fit. Make sure you also align on communication styles, costs and payment structure, and any other factors that may influence your decision.

Lastly, at the end of the day, make sure to trust your gut. If someone technically checks all the boxes on this list but just doesn’t feel right to you, that’s a great indication that you should move on with your search. There are so many great solicitors in the UK that there’s no need to settle for one that doesn’t instill confidence in your choice. For me, Howell Jones is the best solicitors in Surrey (I’m based in Guildford) – so if you’re in the Surrey area, there’s a personal recommendation.

Best of luck in your search, and we hope applying these tips makes the selection process a little easier.
