Most gaming consoles do not support a virtual private network (VPN) connection. Sony’s PlayStation 4 is no exception to this built-in design feature. Though you can get Cox internet plans to enjoy an uninterrupted online gaming experience, you cannot download VPNs on the PlayStation Store.

The step-by-step process is listed below.

  1. Log into your Wi-Fi router
  2. Go to the settings menu
  3. Locate the VPN page
  4. Enter the following details
  1. Name of the service
  2. Server address
  3. Name of your account
  4. Your email address
  5. Password
  6. Pre-shared encryption key

In case your router does not support VPN installation, you can purchase one that comes with built-in VPN installation features. You can select from a variety of VPN connections for your PS4 console. Please note that every new device that connects to your router will be required to run the VPN connection. That might cause minor inconvenience.

Setting a VPN Connection Using Desktop Computer

If you do not want to run a VPN connection on your home Wi-Fi, consider using your personal computer for the task. You can set up VPN using Windows. This will turn your desktop into a virtual router. For that, you’d need both an Ethernet port and a Wi-Fi (or a second Ethernet port). Make sure that you use an active VPN service to establish an active internet connection to your broadband router. The step-by-step process is listed below.

  1. Download your preferred VPN service on your desktop
  2. Establish a connection
  3. Plug the Ethernet cable to both your PC and PS4
  4. Open Control Panel
  5. Go to Network and Internet
  6. Click on Network and Sharing Center
  7. Select Change Adapter Settings appearing on the left-hand side of the window
  8. Use right click to access Properties of your VPN connection
  9. Open the tab of Sharing
  10. Select the option ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’
  11. Pick your internet connection from the drop-down menu of Home Networking Connection
  12. Open Settings on your PS4 console
  13. Select Network Setting followed by Internet Connection
  14. Click on Use a Lan Cable followed by the Easy Connection Method (doing this will automatically scan and set up your Ethernet connection)
  15. Click on Do Not Use a Proxy Server when prompted

Follow each step to establish a VPN connection on your PS4. You can test your internet speed after completing the last step.

Setting Up a VPN Using Mac

Your Mac should have an Ethernet port and be connected to a Wi-Fi network.

  1. Follow step number 1 and 2 (listed above)
  2. Click on System Preferences > Sharing > Internet Sharing
  3. Click on Wi-Fi from the drop-down menu of ‘Share your connection from’ list
  4. Tick the Ethernet option on ‘To computers using’ list
  5. Tick the Internet Sharing option on the left-hand side of your screen
  6. Connect to the VPN software on your Mac
  7. Open Settings on your PS4 console
  8. Select Network Setting followed by Internet Connection
  9. Click on Use a Lan Cable followed by the Easy Connection Method (doing this will automatically scan and set up your Ethernet connection)
  10. Click on Do Not Use a Proxy Server when prompted
